UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE Faculty PositionEvolutionary Microbiologist Position Description: The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, University of California, Riverside, invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track Open Rank position. The position will be available July 1, 2009, and carries a 50% research appointment in the Agricultural Experiment Station and a 50% teaching appointment in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. The Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology currently has 17 ladder-rank faculty and four Cooperative Extension Specialists. Research: This position will carry out studies of microbial gene or genome evolution, phylogenetic reconstructions of microbe evolution, comparative genome analysis, comparative structural biology, and/or evolution of metabolic pathways. The research will be primarily basic in nature, and may focus on eukaryotic or prokaryotic microbes that are saprophytes, pathogens, organisms important in industrial microbiology, etc. The research methodology may be largely theoretical or integrate both theoretical and experimental approaches. The position will join a vibrant community of researchers studying microbe-plant, microbe-animal, and microbe-environment interactions from evolutionary, ecological, molecular and biochemical perspectives. The successful applicant will have access to modern campus facilities in genomics, bioinformatics, proteomics and microscopy to support their research. A competitive start-up package is available. Teaching: The successful candidate will advise both graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to both graduate and undergraduate teaching in microbiology and evolutionary biology, and possibly bioinformatics and statistics.
